In the quiet town of Bennettsville, South Carolina, the life of 58-year-old Jackie Purvis was tragically cut short on December 3, 2016. Purvis, a man remembered by friends and family as having a beautiful soul and a welcoming smile, was fatally shot at his home on West Main Street. The incident, which occurred around 10:30 in the morning, sent ripples of shock and grief through the community where he was known as a friendly and kind-hearted individual.
The investigation into Purvis's
death quickly zeroed in on a suspect, Haneef Aquil Childs of Bennettsville. When a local police officer attempted to pull over Childs' van, he sped away, initiating a dangerous high-speed chase. The pursuit crossed state lines into North Carolina, with speeds reportedly exceeding 100 miles per hour. Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including the Bennettsville Police Department, Marlboro County Sheriff's Office, Scotland County Sheriff's Office, and McColl Police Department, were involved in the effort to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
The chase came to a dramatic end in Laurinburg, North Carolina, after police successfully deployed a spike strip, puncturing the tires of Childs' vehicle. After his van came to a stop, Childs exited the vehicle armed with a weapon. In a tense standoff with multiple officers, he reportedly urged them to shoot him. Officers were able to subdue and arrest Childs by using a stun gun.
Following his capture, Haneef Aquil Childs faced a multitude of charges in North Carolina, including fleeing and eluding arrest, reckless driving, and assault by pointing a firearm. He was held on a $10 million bond and slated for extradition back to South Carolina to face a murder charge in connection with the death of Jackie Purvis.
