On New Year's Day in 2017, a tragic event unfolded in a home on Old Barnwell Road in West Columbia, South Carolina, resulting in the death of 1-year-old Ezra Chavez. The young male was found deceased in the master bedroom of the residence alongside his 4-year-old brother, Elijah Chavez, and their 26-year-old mother, Marissa Hope Reynoso. All three had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the deaths quickly identified the children's father, 25-year-old Jorge Luis Chavez, as the
perpetrator. He was also found deceased in the bedroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities determined that the incident was a murder-suicide. Evidence showed that Jorge Chavez had forced his way into the home before opening fire on his family and then turning the weapon on himself. The handgun used in the killings had been reported stolen years prior.
Prior to the fatal incident, law enforcement had been called to the residence on previous occasions for domestic disturbances involving Jorge Chavez. In one instance, he had reportedly made suicidal statements to Reynoso. On the night of the killings, a distressing 911 call was made by Reynoso, in which she reported a burglary in progress. During the call, a scream and the words, 'He's got a gun,' were heard before the line went silent. Responding deputies arrived within a minute to discover the tragic scene. As the sole suspect in the murder of Ezra Chavez, his brother, and his mother, Jorge Luis Chavez's death concluded the investigation, leaving a community to mourn the devastating loss of life.
