In the late summer of 2016, the community of West Columbia, South Carolina, was rocked by the violent death of Michael Andy McMillan, a 30-year-old Black/African American man. On the morning of August 18th, a concerned resident on Double Branch Road contacted authorities about a suspicious vehicle that had been parked for an unusually long time in front of a vacant house. Responding to the call, law enforcement officers made a grim discovery inside the car: the body of Michael McMillan.
It was immediately apparent that he had been the victim of a fatal shooting. The vehicle, a Blue Ribbon cab, was later towed from the scene as evidence in what was now a homicide investigation.
The investigation into McMillan's death proceeded, and within a few weeks, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department announced a significant breakthrough in the case. Two individuals were taken into custody in connection with the murder. Roscoe Holmes III, a 23-year-old from West Columbia, was identified as the primary suspect and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Alongside him, 18-year-old Jakashia Gracie McPherson of Cayce was arrested and charged with accessory before the fact to murder. Investigators stated that evidence collected had linked Holmes directly to both the crime scene and to McMillan.
Further details emerged regarding the alleged involvement of McPherson, with law enforcement officials stating that she had discussions with Holmes about obtaining a firearm prior to the shooting. Following their arrests, both Roscoe Holmes III and Jakashia Gracie McPherson were booked into the Lexington County Detention Center to await their bond hearings. The arrests brought a sense of cautious relief to the community, as the investigation continued to unfold.
