In the early morning hours of February 11, 2017, a quiet home on Marlboro Road in Spartanburg, South Carolina, became the scene of a violent and tragic home invasion. Inside, 28-year-old Francisco Javier Villar, known to his loved ones as 'Frankie,' was fatally wounded. The incident unfolded at approximately 5 a.m. when multiple individuals forced their way into the residence with the intention of committing a robbery.
A confrontation ensued, during which Villar attempted to defend
himself by firing at the intruders. In the exchange of gunfire, he was struck twice. Despite being rushed to Spartanburg Medical Center, Villar succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The violent encounter left a community in shock and a family mourning the sudden and senseless loss of a young man.
The investigation into the deadly home invasion led Spartanburg police to identify four suspects. Jarvis Tremaine Stripling, 31 at the time, was charged with murder, two counts of kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Also implicated were Rayshon Lamar Smith, Alicia Danielle Pilgrim, and Efrain Rivera. Smith was also injured during the shootout, sustaining a gunshot wound to his ear, which ultimately led investigators to him at a local hospital where he later confessed his involvement.
The legal process brought some measure of justice for Villar's family. After a three-day trial, Jarvis Tremaine Stripling was found guilty of first-degree burglary, attempted armed robbery, and two counts of kidnapping. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Rayshon Lamar Smith also pleaded guilty to murder and other violent charges, receiving a 30-year prison sentence for his role in the fatal home invasion.
