In the quiet dark of a mid-April evening in 2017, the life of 20-year-old Derrick Bowens Jr., a Black male from Summerville, South Carolina, was tragically cut short in North Charleston. On April 15th, on Suzanne Drive, Bowens was discovered outside a residence with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders arrived at the scene, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
