In the summer of 2017, the life of 17-year-old Knowledge Sumpter was tragically cut short in North Charleston, South Carolina. The young Black man was found deceased in a yard along Harvey Avenue on the morning of July 21st. An investigation determined that Sumpter had been shot and killed the previous night, following an attempted robbery.
North Charleston Police responded to reports of gunshots in the area just before 10 p.m. on July 20th.
Their investigation into the homicide led to the arrests of two teenagers. Deangelo Montrell Haynes Jr., who was 16 at the time, was charged with murder. According to court documents, it is alleged that Haynes shot Sumpter as he was trying to flee the robbery attempt.
A second suspect, a 14-year-old male, was also taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with Sumpter's death. This younger suspect, accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in to the authorities. The case is being prosecuted in the adult court system for Haynes.
