In the late summer evening of August 7, 2017, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, a violent altercation outside Biggerstaff Grocery on Farley Avenue cut short the life of 28-year-old Tyshann Rashad Smith. Smith, a Black male, was discovered fatally shot inside a car, the victim of a triple shooting that also resulted in the death of another man, Raymond Turner, and left a third individual with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The investigation into the deadly encounter revealed a
grim sequence of events. An argument involving Smith escalated into an exchange of gunfire. It was determined that Smith had first shot Raymond Turner. In the ensuing chaos, another man, 19-year-old Gettis Andre Chambers, fatally shot Smith.
