In the early morning hours of August 26, 2017, the life of 46-year-old Demetrious Alveriz Fuller, known to some by his nickname 'Meatball,' was tragically cut short in Greenwood, South Carolina. An argument with another man, Xzariera Okevis Gray, escalated to a fatal confrontation. The verbal dispute ended when Gray produced a gun and shot Fuller once.
The sound of the gunshot alerted nearby Greenwood police officers, who quickly responded to Tanyard Avenue.
There, they discovered Fuller's body. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Gray fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. A few days later, he was located and apprehended in Columbia, South Carolina.
The investigation into Fuller's death was aided by crucial eyewitness testimony, which not only identified Gray as the shooter but also helped police recover the weapon used in the crime. Further solidifying the case against Gray was surveillance footage from a nearby residence that captured the moment of the shooting. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
During his four-day trial, Gray took the stand in his own defense, claiming that he had acted in self-defense. However, the jury was not persuaded by his testimony. Just before midnight, they returned a guilty verdict on all charges. On May 10, 2019, Xzariera Okevis Gray was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Demetrious Alveriz Fuller.
