In the early morning hours of June 6, 2020, a dispute inside a residence on Meadow Street in Greenwood, South Carolina, escalated to a fatal conclusion. Brandon Moton, a 30-year-old male, was shot and killed during the altercation. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Greenwood County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Moton's death was the result of the shooting.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led Greenwood
police to a suspect, 19-year-old Idris Ballard-Gallardo. Authorities determined that Ballard-Gallardo was present at the residence and had been involved in an argument with Moton before the shooting occurred. Evidence gathered at the scene and through the subsequent investigation pointed to Ballard-Gallardo as the individual who fired the weapon that killed Moton. He was subsequently arrested and faced several serious charges, including murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Following his arrest, the legal process against Idris Ballard-Gallardo moved forward. Ultimately, he was convicted on a charge of voluntary manslaughter in Greenwood County for the death of Brandon Moton. The court sentenced him to a term of 25 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting. This conviction brought a measure of justice for Moton's family, who remembered him as a loving son, father, brother, and uncle. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence on the Greenwood community. Tragically, in an unforeseen turn of events, Idris Ballard-Gallardo's life also came to a violent end. In September 2024, at the age of 23, he was stabbed to death in a common area of the maximum-security prison where he was serving his sentence.
