In the spring of 2024, the life of a young man from Greenwood, South Carolina, was tragically cut short in an incident involving firearms. Traveon J. Johnson, a 17-year-old Black male, died on the evening of April 10, 2024. The events leading to his death unfolded at the Phoenix Place Apartments, where Johnson was with several other individuals.
According to the Greenwood Police Department, officers were called to the apartment complex around 9:40 p.m.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with several people attempting to carry Johnson out of one of the apartments. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Emergency medical services transported him to Self Regional Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Johnson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a harrowing narrative of misadventure. Johnson and others in the apartment had been 'playing with guns' when the fatal shot was fired. Authorities identified 22-year-old Je'von Amari Williams as the individual who discharged the weapon that killed Traveon Johnson.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Greenwood Police Department arrested Williams. He was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Johnson's death.
