In the quiet community of Galivants Ferry, South Carolina, a tragic discovery was made on September 14, 2017. Inside a home on Twilight Road, authorities found the bodies of 25-year-old Porscha Cobb and her 26-year-old brother, Dexter Cobb. Responding to a call about a cardiac arrest, officers arrived to a grim scene. Porscha was found bleeding from her face and was pronounced dead, while her brother was located deceased in a bathroom.
It was later determined that both siblings had died from gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a man from Aynor, Brandon Gore. In November 2017, Gore was charged with two counts of murder. The case against him was built on the testimony of a witness who claimed Gore had confessed to the killings, revealing details about the crime that were not publicly known. Prosecutors pointed out that information regarding where the victims were shot and the manner in which they were left had not been released to the public.
The legal proceedings that followed were complex. Brandon Gore was granted bond in March 2018, a decision that was met with opposition from the victims' family. His release came with conditions, including home monitoring, which he later violated, leading to his arrest on a drug charge in January 2020. Despite this, he was again released on bond in March 2020, with the judge citing a need to reduce the jail population due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gore continued to have issues with the terms of his release, including failing to make payments for his monitoring and being found in the presence of alcohol and in 'known drug locations.' In August 2022, while out on bond for the double homicide, Gore was arrested again and faced charges for possession of methamphetamine, heroin, and Xanax, as well as firearms.
The murder trial for Brandon Gore commenced in September 2022. A key and contentious piece of evidence was a recorded statement from Gore's own mother, in which she implicated her son in the murders. However, the defense argued that she later recanted this statement, claiming she had lied in an attempt to get her son away from a life of drugs and off the streets. They also suggested she could have learned details of the crime from news articles. After deliberations, the jury acquitted Brandon Gore of all charges in the murders of Porscha and Dexter Cobb.
