In the spring of 2017, the life of 29-year-old Ricky Jones was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. A Black male, Jones became an unintended victim in a violent domestic dispute that unfolded on April 14th. That evening, he was at the Kingston Avenue apartment of a friend, Delivia Carron. Carron had previously obtained an EPO against her ex-boyfriend, Daquan Lampkin, and, fearing for her safety, had asked Jones to be with her.
Later that night, Lampkin arrived at the apartment
and, in an act of brutal violence, shot and killed both Carron and Jones. Police later found Carron's six-month-old son unharmed in a back bedroom of the apartment. The aftermath of the killings left family and friends grappling with the sudden and senseless loss of two lives. Jones was remembered as being in the wrong place at the wrong time, a friend who was there to protect another in a time of need.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of Daquan Lampkin. After a trial that included four days of testimony, a jury found him guilty of the murders of both Ricky Jones and Delivia Carron. In May 2023, nearly six years after the crime, Lampkin was sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole. The sentencing brought a measure of closure to the families who had waited patiently for justice, with Ricky Jones's mother expressing that her years of prayer for accountability had been answered.
