Toni Lynn Rivers, a sixth-grade student at Hampton Elementary School known for her vibrant personality and love of the outdoors, passed away on October 27, 2017. Her death was the culmination of what her family described as relentless bullying.
For months, Toni had been the target of bullying both at school and online.
Her mother, Amy Thomas, had repeatedly reached out to the school's principal to report the harassment, but the torment continued. The bullying took a severe toll on Toni's mental health. On October 25, 2017, she confided in five of her friends, telling them she 'just couldn't do this anymore' and that she intended to take her own life. Later that day, her older sister found her at their home with a gunshot wound.
Emergency services were called, and Toni was rushed to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She fought for her life for 72 hours, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The firearm she used belonged to her, though her family maintained that their guns and ammunition were stored separately and away from the children.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Toni's death. The investigation focused on what led the young girl to take such a drastic step. Ultimately, her death was ruled a suicide, and as a result, no criminal arrests were made, and no suspects were named.
