In the late hours of a warm South Carolina evening, the life of 18-year-old Tydre Shyheim Hailey was cut tragically short. It was shortly after midnight on September 13, 2018, in the Homeland Park area of Anderson County, that the fatal incident unfolded. Hailey, a Black/African American male, was with Cortaisha Nykia Kiera Brown, also 18 at the time, when a single gunshot pierced the quiet of the night, striking him in the chest.
In the immediate aftermath, Hailey’s brother and two
other individuals rushed him to the AnMed Health Medical Center, desperately hoping to save his life. Despite their swift actions and the efforts of medical personnel, Hailey was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, leaving his family and friends to grapple with an unthinkable loss. He was a student at Westside High School, known and loved by many, including his three sisters and five brothers.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on Cortaisha Brown. According to reports, a distraught Brown told authorities that she 'didn't mean to' shoot Hailey and tragically admitted that she 'didn't know it was real.' Based on witness statements and her own admission, investigators determined that her actions displayed a reckless disregard for the safety of others.
As a result, Cortaisha Nykia Kiera Brown was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. She was taken into custody and transported to the Anderson County Detention Center to await a bond hearing. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of a young man, while the legal process against the young woman responsible for his death began to unfold, highlighting the devastating consequences of mishandling a firearm.
