In the late hours of a February evening in Orangeburg, South Carolina, the life of 17-year-old Raquan Malik Middleton was tragically cut short. On February 24, 2019, the young Black man was fatally wounded in a burst of gunfire that erupted in the parking lot of a Cookout restaurant on John C. Calhoun Drive. The incident unfolded as two groups of people in separate vehicles engaged in a chaotic exchange of fire, and a stray bullet struck Middleton.
He was rushed to the Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the senseless violence led authorities to 18-year-old Trequan Tyreke Stokes. Utilizing surveillance footage from the area, law enforcement was able to piece together the events of that night and identify Stokes as a suspect. The footage reportedly showed a car with two individuals parked at the restaurant when another vehicle, a Mercedes carrying four occupants, arrived. Shortly after two individuals from the Mercedes approached the parked car, the exchange of gunfire began. In the wake of the investigation, Stokes was arrested and faced serious charges, including one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder for his alleged role in the incident that claimed Middleton's life.
The shooting sent ripples of fear and misinformation throughout the Orangeburg community. Concerns over potential further violence spread rapidly on social media, prompting many parents to keep their children home from school. The local school district experienced a significant increase in absenteeism in the days following the incident. In response, law enforcement increased their presence at area schools to quell anxieties and ensure the safety of students and staff.
