In the spring of 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in Orangeburg, South Carolina, leaving a community in mourning and a family grappling with a sudden and tragic loss. On May 11, 41-year-old Mark Alan Smith, a white male, was fatally shot in an incident that also claimed the life of 43-year-old Gene 'Coochie' Ray Williams, Jr. A third individual was wounded in the attack, the details of which sent ripples of concern through the city.
