On the afternoon of June 11, 2019, tragedy struck on Friendly Street in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, disrupting the peace of the quiet neighborhood. Bruce Campbell, a 48-year-old Black male described by friends and family as a kind-hearted man and a well-known local barber, was sitting in his vehicle in his own driveway when the incident occurred. Around 4:00 p.m., a group of individuals approached his car, leading to a confrontation that escalated quickly.
During the altercation, gunshots were fired, and Campbell was struck. Despite the arrival of emergency responders, the Greenville County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene, marking the city's first homicide in nearly two years.
Investigators with the Fountain Inn Police Department immediately launched a probe into the shooting, calling on the community for leads. Witness reports and evidence suggested that at least three people might have been involved in the ambush. Authorities identified a dark-colored Nissan Altima, believed to be a mid-to-late 2000s model, as a vehicle of interest connected to the suspects. The senseless violence left the community in mourning, with loved ones holding candlelight vigils to honor Campbell’s memory and plea for justice.
Months of investigation culminated in a breakthrough the following year. On January 10, 2020, police arrested Trico Anthony Ladson, a 26-year-old resident of Simpsonville. Ladson was charged with murder, along with several other serious offenses including criminal conspiracy, attempted armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a violent felon. At the time of his arrest, Ladson was already on supervised probation for prior convictions, which included attempted armed robbery and assault by a mob. While this arrest brought some closure, detectives noted that Ladson was likely just one of the perpetrators involved, and the case remained open as they continued to search for additional suspects.
