In the late spring of 2017, the life of 24-year-old Johnny Lee Pyles, a Black / African American male, came to a tragic end in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. On the evening of May 22, 2017, deputies from the Laurens County Sheriff's Office arrived at a residence on Tifton Court with a warrant for Pyles's arrest. They were seeking him in connection with the double homicide of Sidney Speaks and Roydrecilious Irby, who had been discovered deceased on Winetta Street in Laurens just two days
prior.
As law enforcement officers approached the home, a single gunshot rang out from within. Upon entering the residence, they found Pyles in distress. Despite the immediate medical attention he received, Johnny Lee Pyles was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called to investigate the incident. Their investigation later concluded that no officers had discharged their weapons and that Pyles had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The death of Pyles was a significant development in a broader investigation into the murders of Speaks and Irby. In connection with the double homicide, authorities had also arrested three other individuals. Steven Antonie Redd, Sterling Orlando Workman, and Michael Dewayne Watts were taken into custody and faced a range of charges, including murder and obstruction of justice. The series of violent events left the communities of Fountain Inn and Laurens grappling with the impact of the crimes.
