In the early hours of a Monday in Anderson, South Carolina, a domestic dispute turned fatal, claiming the life of 20-year-old Landis O'neal Osbey. The young man, born on May 6, 1999, was at a residence on Cunningham Drive when an argument escalated between his mother and her boyfriend, Rashard Mandrell Smith.
Attempting to intervene and protect his mother, Landis was shot in the chest. The shooting was witnessed by four other people, including a child.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 1 a.m. on January 6, 2020, but despite their efforts, Landis succumbed to his injuries and died at the home.
Following the incident, 40-year-old Rashard Mandrell Smith was arrested. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Authorities also noted that Smith had a history of criminal domestic violence convictions. He was denied bond at a hearing following his arrest.
