Richard 'Dick' Broadwell, aged 30, met his end on October 5, 1892, in Coffeyville, Kansas. Broadwell was a member of the notorious Dalton Gang, a group of outlaws infamous for their bank and train robberies. On that fateful day, the gang attempted a daring double bank robbery in Coffeyville, targeting the Condon Bank and the First National Bank simultaneously.
The Dalton Gang, led by brothers Bob and Grat Dalton, included Emmett Dalton, Bill Powers, and Broadwell himself.
Bob Dalton, aged 31, was the mastermind behind the plan, while Grat Dalton, aged 29, and Emmett Dalton, aged 21, played significant roles. Bill Powers, another gang member, was also involved in the heist.
As the gang members entered the banks, the townspeople quickly recognized them and raised the alarm. A fierce gun battle ensued between the gang and the armed citizens of Coffeyville. During the shootout, Bob and Grat Dalton, along with Bill Powers, were killed on the spot. Emmett Dalton, despite being severely wounded, survived and was later arrested.
Dick Broadwell managed to escape the initial gunfire and fled on horseback. However, he was mortally wounded and collapsed a short distance outside of town, where he succumbed to his injuries. The citizens of Coffeyville displayed remarkable bravery in defending their town, resulting in the deaths of four townsmen during the exchange of gunfire.
Emmett Dalton, the sole surviving member of the gang, was apprehended and taken into custody. He was later tried and sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the robbery and the deaths that occurred. The Dalton Gang's attempted robbery in Coffeyville marked the end of their criminal exploits and left a lasting legacy in the annals of Wild West history.
