In the late hours of May 31, 2020, in Greenville, South Carolina, a life was tragically cut short. Edlars Isa Johnson Funez, a 32-year-old man, was fatally shot while working as a security guard at La Guera Bar and Grill on West Parker Road. The incident began when Funez escorted Tito Edmar Garcia Flores out of the establishment.
Later that night, the situation escalated dramatically when Flores returned to the bar, this time accompanied by another individual, Ever Torres Aleman.
An altercation ensued, during which Flores brandished a firearm. He initially fired a shot that missed its mark, leading to a physical struggle with Funez. During the chaotic encounter, Flores pistol-whipped Funez, causing him to fall. Flores then stood over the fallen security guard and shot him in the chest. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call around 10:40 p.m. and, upon arrival, discovered Funez with the fatal gunshot wound. The coroner's office would later rule his death a homicide.
The entire tragic event was captured by surveillance cameras, providing crucial evidence for investigators. In the aftermath of the shooting, Tito Edmar Garcia Flores fled the state, managing to travel to Kansas City, Missouri. However, his time as a fugitive was limited. Nearly two months later, in July 2020, law enforcement apprehended him. Following his capture, Flores was extradited back to South Carolina to answer for his crime. During a plea hearing, he admitted to the murder of Edlars Isa Johnson Funez and was subsequently sentenced to serve 40 years in prison.
