In the early evening of March 23, 2021, the body of a young man was discovered alongside Interstate 20 in Lexington County, South Carolina. The deceased was identified as 21-year-old Torrian Bryant Oree, a Black male from the nearby town of Edgefield. An autopsy would later confirm that Oree had been shot multiple times. His sudden and violent death left a community in shock and a family grappling with a profound loss.
Oree was a father to a three-year-old daughter, and his loved ones remembered him as a cherished family member.
The investigation into Oree's death moved swiftly. Within a day, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department announced the arrest of two suspects, both 17-year-old males. Due to their status as minors, their identities were not publicly released. Investigators determined that Oree had been a passenger in a car with the two teenagers, traveling east on I-20. A disagreement erupted within the vehicle, escalating to the point where Oree was shot. It is believed he then either fell from or was pushed out of the moving car onto the side of the interstate.
The two teenage suspects were taken into custody and charged with murder. They were held at the Lexington County Detention Center. Shortly after the shooting, the two suspects had sought treatment at a local hospital for a gunshot wound that one of them had sustained, which ultimately led law enforcement to them. The driver of the vehicle was arrested in the early morning following the incident, and the other teen was apprehended later that afternoon.
In the wake of this tragedy, Torrian Oree's family, while devastated by their loss, spoke of forgiveness. They announced plans to create a youth foundation in his name, hoping to prevent similar acts of violence and provide support for young people in their community. The legal proceedings against the two teenage suspects have remained largely out of the public eye, a common practice in cases involving minors.
