In the spring of 2021, the life of 26-year-old Dexter Rashard Sullivan was cut short in Aiken, South Carolina. On the afternoon of Sunday, May 23, 2021, a verbal altercation on Iris Lane escalated into a fatal shooting. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing Sullivan in a dispute with another man. When Aiken County deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a trail of blood leading to a wooded area where they found Sullivan unresponsive with bloodstains on his torso.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect, 34-year-old Aaron Azeem Williams. According to witness statements, Williams had been a passenger in a blue Honda Civic driven by a white female. The car stopped on Iris Lane, at which point Williams and Sullivan engaged in a heated argument that culminated in the shooting. Following the incident, Williams reportedly fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by investigators later the same day at another residence on Iris Lane. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Williams was then booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials appealed to the public for any information regarding the female driver of the blue Honda Civic, who was also a witness to the tragic event. Dexter Sullivan was remembered by his family as a man who loved to travel and play basketball and was deeply family-oriented. His death was a significant loss to his community, and his life was celebrated in a service held on June 1, 2021.
