In the early evening of July 12, 2021, a dispute at the Village St. Claire Apartments in Manning, South Carolina, escalated into a fatal encounter. The altercation resulted in the shooting death of 21-year-old Jonathan Derrick Johnson, a Black male from Sumter. He was privately transported to McLeod Health Clarendon, where he was pronounced dead by the emergency room staff.
The incident, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., prompted an investigation by the Manning Police Department.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect in the shooting and sought public assistance in locating him. The man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting was named as Davion Johnson of Manning. Following the release of his identity, law enforcement received numerous tips from the community. A few days after the incident, Davion Johnson voluntarily surrendered to officials with the City of Manning.
Upon his surrender, Davion Johnson was taken into custody and faced serious charges related to the death of Jonathan Johnson. He was formally charged with Murder and Possession of a Deadly Weapon during a Violent Crime. The Manning Police Chief publicly thanked the community for their assistance and the valuable information provided through their anonymous tip line, which aided in the progress of the investigation.
