In the early morning hours of July 15, 2021, a domestic dispute in Lee County, near Mayesville, South Carolina, escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 46-year-old Chadwick Demond Evans. The incident unfolded around 6:22 a.m. on Elliott Highway, shattering the quiet of the rural community. Evans, a resident of Timmonsville, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Authorities responding to the incident identified the suspect as Clifton James
Toney. It was Toney himself who contacted 911 after the shooting and surrendered to law enforcement without resistance at the residence where the altercation occurred. The Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the deadly confrontation stemmed from a domestic situation.
Following his surrender, Clifton James Toney was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder in connection with Evans' death.
