On August 27, 2023, Jorge Lopez, 18, and Jaquavios K. Williams Howard, 16, both students at Battery Creek High School, were fatally shot near 281 Etheridge Road in Yemassee, South Carolina. A female passenger in the vehicle with them sustained injuries but survived. Reports suggest the gunfire may have originated from inside the car Lopez was driving.
