In a quiet corner of Yemassee, South Carolina, a tragic event unfolded on the evening of August 27, 2023, claiming the life of 18-year-old Jorge Lopez. A student at Battery Creek High School, Lopez was behind the wheel of a car on Etheridge Road when gunfire erupted, forever altering the lives of those inside. The male teenager was struck by multiple bullets and was rushed to Coastal Carolina Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The violence of that evening was not
limited to Lopez. Also in the vehicle was 16-year-old Jaquavios K. Williams Howard, a fellow student at Battery Creek High School. Howard was pronounced dead at the scene, another young life cut tragically short by the hail of bullets. A third individual, a female passenger, was also wounded in the attack but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. The specifics of her identity have been withheld.
In the immediate aftermath, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation into the double homicide. Recognizing the gravity of the case, the investigation was subsequently handed over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. As of late 2023, SLED had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive behind the attack and the circumstances leading up to it remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.
