In the early morning hours of May 5, 2017, the life of 31-year-old Darrell Lewis Hamilton was tragically cut short in the Yemassee area of South Carolina. A male resident of the community, Hamilton was discovered deceased in the driver's seat of a Toyota Tundra near the intersection of Rosemary Road and Point South Road. The truck's engine was still running, and his foot remained on the gas pedal, suggesting a sudden and violent end to his night.
An autopsy would later confirm that he had been shot three times, with one of the wounds proving fatal.
The investigation into Hamilton's death revealed a story of a night spent with friends that ended in betrayal. On May 4th, Hamilton had been socializing and firing guns with Alvin Mitchell and another friend. After dropping off the third individual, a fatal encounter occurred between Hamilton and Mitchell. Prosecutors later argued that the motive for the killing was robbery, stating that Mitchell intended to steal a few thousand dollars from Hamilton. Evidence found at the scene pointed towards a struggle and a calculated crime. Investigators discovered blood-covered $100 bills,. 45-caliber shell casings, and a crucial piece of evidence: a house key belonging to Alvin Mitchell's girlfriend, which was covered in Hamilton's blood.
Alvin Mitchell, a 28-year-old from Jasper County, was quickly identified as the primary suspect. He was not present when authorities arrived at the scene. However, further investigation uncovered damning evidence linking him to the crime. Drops of Mitchell's blood and articles of his clothing were found at a nearby abandoned home. It was also discovered that he had attempted to alter his appearance by trimming his beard.
Following his arrest, Alvin Mitchell was charged with the murder of Darrell Hamilton and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. His trial in August 2019 culminated in a swift verdict. After a three-day trial at the Jasper County Courthouse, the jury deliberated for just 24 minutes before finding him guilty on both counts.
