In the early morning hours of a Friday in Sumter, South Carolina, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 27-year-old Jarvis Hudson. On September 10, 2021, Hudson, a resident of Columbia, drove to the Andrena Drive home of his estranged girlfriend, 26-year-old Haley Martin. An apparent confrontation between the two led to shots being fired.
When Sumter Police Department officers responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 3 a.m., they
discovered Hudson inside a vehicle parked at the residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. Martin was found outside the home. Hudson was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The subsequent investigation revealed that another individual, 25-year-old Courtney L. Brown of Eastover, was also present in the home at the time of the shooting, along with two children, aged one and eight. Brown had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived but later turned himself in.
Both Martin and Brown were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. They were each charged with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Brown faced an additional charge of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Both were booked at the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. The Sumter County Coroner's Office scheduled an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
