Mr. Yorel La'Zion Milton, a 22-year-old male, died on September 25, 2021, in Rock Hill, South Carolina. His death occurred following a violent altercation at an apartment complex on Celanese Road. The incident, which transpired around 10 p.m., stemmed from a domestic dispute.
The conflict involved Rayquan Jamal Steele, who was 27 at the time, and his ex-girlfriend, who was with Milton at her apartment.
Steele arrived at the residence where a child he shared with the woman was also present. After initially making threats and leaving, Steele returned armed with a 10 mm handgun. An exchange of gunfire ensued between Steele and Milton. Milton was struck multiple times, with a fatal shot to his chest. Steele sustained gunshot wounds to his legs but survived his injuries.
Following the shooting, law enforcement found Steele injured at the scene. He was treated for his wounds and subsequently arrested the next day. He faced charges of murder, second-degree domestic violence for the threats made in the presence of the child, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Steele was held in the York County jail without bond following his initial court appearance.
During a three-day trial in York County, the prosecution argued that Milton was acting in self-defense when he shot Steele five times after Steele arrived at the apartment armed. Steele's defense claimed he shot Milton in self-defense. The jury ultimately found Steele not guilty of domestic violence but convicted him of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. In February 2025, a judge sentenced Rayquan Jamal Steele, then 30, to 25 years in prison for his role in the death of Yorel Milton. His legal representation has stated an intention to appeal the conviction.
