In the winter of 2022, the life of 30-year-old Brandon Van Dyke, a male resident of Columbia, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On the evening of February 2nd, officers responded to a report of a shooting at The Landings at Forest Place Apartments on Covenant Road. There, they discovered Van Dyke inside a car, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
A graduate of Dreher High School and the College of Charleston, Brandon was remembered by his family as a cherished son, brother, and nephew. The motive for the fatal shooting was believed to be robbery. In the days following the incident, the Forest Acres Police Department, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies, conducted a thorough investigation.
Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 19-year-old Tyrik Hamadii Edgerton. Less than a week after the shooting, Edgerton was taken into custody without incident at the very same apartment complex where the crime occurred. He was subsequently charged with murder and held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. While an arrest was made, authorities indicated that the investigation remained ongoing to determine if any other individuals were involved.
