In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Gaffney, South Carolina, a life was tragically cut short. Demetrius Nigerian Wood, a 22-year-old male, was shot and killed on May 1, 2022. The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. outside a residence on General Drive. When deputies from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they found Demetrius unresponsive; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations into the shooting revealed a situation that began innocently enough.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff, Demetrius had been engaged in what was described as 'play fighting' or 'horse playing' with another individual. This playful altercation, however, took a dark and violent turn, escalating to the point where a firearm was introduced and discharged. Authorities believed from early on that the shooting was not a random act of violence and that Demetrius and the person who shot him were acquainted with each other.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and was believed to have crossed state lines into North Carolina. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office worked with other law enforcement agencies to locate the individual responsible for Demetrius Wood's death. Their investigation led them to identify Scotty Lindsay as the primary suspect in the case.
More than a year after the fatal shooting, an arrest was made. Scotty Lindsay, 37, was taken into custody in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was subsequently extradited back to South Carolina in June 2023 to face legal proceedings. Upon his return, Lindsay was charged with the murder of Demetrius Wood. During his initial court appearance, he was denied bond and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center to await trial.
