In the spring of 2022, a wave of violence descended upon the city of Newberry, South Carolina, forever altering the lives of several families. On May 22, 18-year-old Jahquindon Shunquariun Toland, a Black male known affectionately as 'Q', was tragically killed. His death was part of a series of shootings that claimed the lives of three other teenagers in a single day, shaking the community to its core.
The day's violence began shortly after midnight on Wise Street, where 16-year-old
Mykain Davis was found with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The bloodshed did not end there. Later that afternoon, law enforcement responded to another shooting on Eleanor Street, a short distance from the first incident. At this scene, they discovered the bodies of Jahquindon Toland, along with 15-year-old Jhisere Robinson and 19-year-old Sonterrious Davis. All three had been fatally shot.
In the aftermath of the shootings, the Newberry Police Department, in conjunction with the Newberry County Sheriff's Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, launched an intensive investigation. It was soon determined that all four victims were acquainted and belonged to the same social circle, though a specific motive for the shootings remained elusive. The close proximity in time and location of the incidents suggested a possible connection, a theory that investigators worked diligently to unravel.
While the investigation into the deaths of Toland, Robinson, and Sonterrious Davis continued, progress was made in the case of Mykain Davis. Three individuals, 22-year-old Davonta Shyquone Holley, 17-year-old Damani Ahkiel Davenport, and 17-year-old Xavier Dantrell Palmer, were arrested and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and criminal conspiracy in connection with his death. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed if these arrests are directly linked to the triple homicide on Eleanor Street. The community was left to grapple with the profound loss of four young lives as the investigation into the full scope of that tragic day's events remained ongoing.
