On a Saturday evening in Newberry, South Carolina, the life of 53-year-old Troy Leonard Sims, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On April 20, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., gunfire erupted near the intersection of Emory Street and Hunt Street. When officers from the Newberry Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered three individuals with gunshot wounds.
Mr. Sims was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.
Of the other two victims, one was transported to Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia for treatment, while the other received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene. The Newberry County Coroner's Office has classified Mr. Sims' death as a homicide.
An investigation into the shooting was promptly initiated and remains ongoing. The Newberry Police Department, the Newberry County Coroner's Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are jointly handling the case.
