In the small community of Bamberg, South Carolina, the life of 37-year-old Latoya Yvette McMillan, a Black female, was tragically cut short on July 4, 2022. On that day, she was discovered deceased in her residence on Houser Street, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound. Her death was subsequently ruled a homicide by the Bamberg County Coroner.
The discovery was made under unsettling circumstances.
Bamberg police officers were initially responding to a call about a burglary at a neighboring home. During their investigation, they noticed that McMillan's front door was ajar. Prompted to check on her welfare, the officers entered her home and found her body, leading to the initiation of a homicide investigation.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Bamberg Police Department requested the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to lead the investigation. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with McMillan's murder. The investigation remains active, and law enforcement officials have publicly appealed for any information that might lead to a resolution in the case. They urge anyone with knowledge of the events leading to her death to come forward and contact SLED. The community continues to await answers and justice for Latoya McMillan.
