Marshal Leonard S. Rich, aged 42, was a dedicated lawman in Webb City, Missouri. On the night of August 10, 1902, he responded to a disturbance at Lizzie Reed's Resort, a two-story establishment on Main Street. The trouble began when Jim Gideon, a known troublemaker, was causing issues with some of the girls at the resort.
