On the evening of January 2, 2025, police officers in Kansas City, Missouri, responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Northwest 91st Terrace to conduct a welfare check. Upon arrival around 9:45 p.m., authorities observed smoke emanating from the home and requested assistance from the Kansas City Fire Department. Firefighters arrived and extinguished a blaze inside the structure, allowing law enforcement to enter and inspect the premises.
Inside the residence, responders discovered
three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Eight-year-old Jeffrey Hatcher, a male, was found alive but in critical condition. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Also discovered at the scene were his six-year-old sister, Charlotte, and their father, 38-year-old Zachary Hatcher. Both Charlotte and Zachary were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Investigators determined that the incident was a murder-suicide. According to police reports, Zachary Hatcher fatally shot both of his children before turning the weapon on himself. The fire inside the home was extinguished before it could fully consume the structure, preserving the scene for detectives. No other suspects were sought in connection with the deaths, and the case was closed as a domestic homicide-suicide.
Jeffrey was a second-grade student at Pathfinder Elementary School in the Platte County School District. He was remembered by his community and family as a 'voracious reader' with a deep love for learning, affectionately known at his school as the 'Keeper of Odd Knowledge.' Following the tragedy, the school district provided counseling services to students and staff to help them cope with the loss of the two young siblings.
