In the winter of 1989, a dedicated public servant named Charles F. West, a male Juvenile Officer with the Jackson County Family Court in Missouri, met a tragic and untimely end. For eight years, he had committed himself to working with troubled youth, a passion that was well-known among his colleagues. His life, however, was cut short on January 10th of that year by the very individual he was trying to help.
The circumstances leading to Officer West's death began with his assignment to
supervise a juvenile inmate with a history of violent offenses, including the shooting of four other youths and auto theft. The juvenile had sustained a jaw injury during a prior altercation and required medical attention. Officer West was tasked with transporting the young man to Children's Mercy Hospital for treatment.
On the return trip to the detention center, a fateful detour was made to the juvenile's home. It was there that the juvenile managed to acquire a handgun from inside the residence. In a shocking turn of events, the young man shot Officer West in the back of the head. He then concealed the officer's body in the trunk of the car and fled the scene.
The horrifying incident was witnessed by the juvenile's own family, who promptly alerted the authorities. A short time later, the abandoned vehicle was discovered by police, with Officer West's body still inside. The juvenile who committed this heinous act was subsequently apprehended. The loss of Officer West was deeply felt by his parents, seven brothers, and four sisters, who survived him.
