On December 3, 2007, a tragic domestic violence incident occurred in Jackson, Missouri, claiming the life of 16-year-old male Michael Reed Jeffers. The sequence of events began when Michael's mother, Katherine Moshiri, attempted to separate from her husband and Michael's stepfather, Mir Shahin Moshiri. After obtaining an order of protection earlier that day, Katherine returned to the family home on West Mary Street to retrieve her children.
Upon her arrival, Mir Shahin Moshiri became enraged when informed of the impending divorce and produced a. 38-caliber handgun. He opened fire on his wife, striking her four times in the head, neck, arm, and clavicle. Despite her critical injuries, Katherine managed to escape the residence and fled to the sheriff's department to summon help, leaving the children inside with her husband.
Law enforcement officers responded to the home and were forced to break in to gain access. Inside, they discovered a harrowing scene spread across multiple floors of the residence. In the living room, they found the body of 36-year-old Mir Shahin Moshiri, who had died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Moving to the upstairs bedrooms, officers located the couple's two young daughters. Four-year-old Madison Lynne Moshiri was found deceased, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Her younger sister, two-year-old Meghan Moshiri, was also discovered with a gunshot wound to the head but was still alive.
Officers continued their search of the property and found Michael Reed Jeffers in the basement of the home. He had been shot twice in the head but was still clinging to life. Emergency responders rushed him to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he was listed in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Michael succumbed to his injuries the following day, December 4, 2007. His younger sister Meghan was airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis and survived her injuries, as did their mother, Katherine, who remained hospitalized in critical condition for some time following the attack.
The investigation concluded that Mir Shahin Moshiri was the sole perpetrator of the attacks on his family members before taking his own life. As a result of his suicide at the scene, there were no arrests, trials, or criminal convictions related to the murders of Michael and Madison or the attempted murders of Katherine and Meghan. The case was closed as a murder-suicide, with authorities noting that the violence was precipitated by the suspect's anger over the separation and protective order.
