In a tragic turn of events stemming from a drug deal gone wrong, 31-year-old James Porter was shot and killed on January 18, 2011, in Columbia, Missouri. The fatal incident unfolded at the Sunset Mobile Home Park, where Porter and his cousin, Robert McPike, had arranged a transaction to exchange 30 pounds of marijuana for $20,000.
The deal involved a man from northeast Missouri who provided the money and two dealers.
On the day of the shooting, Porter and another man involved in the deal, Zachariah Peterson, went to the trailer park to finalize the transaction. According to witness testimony from Peterson's subsequent trial, a fight was observed between two men inside Peterson's Chevrolet Tahoe. This was followed by a gunshot, and a man, identified as Porter, fell out of the passenger side of the vehicle.
Following an investigation into the homicide, Zachariah Joel Peterson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. During his trial, Peterson claimed he had left the scene before the shooting occurred, leaving Porter with the two dealers. However, evidence presented in court contradicted his account, and a jury found him guilty of felony murder.
The court sentenced Peterson to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of James Porter. Porter's cousin, Robert McPike, was also arrested on suspicion of distribution of a controlled substance in connection with the events that led to Porter's death.
