Joyce Elaine Sneed, a 67-year-old woman from Columbia, Kentucky, died on April 20, 2026, at her residence on Lakeview Drive in Adair County. She had been born in Lebanon, Kentucky, on July 14, 1958, and was remembered locally as someone whose life centered on family, faith, work, and the simple routines she enjoyed, including gardening, music, and time with loved ones.
She had worked for part of her life as a machine operator at OshKosh and attended 3trees Church.
Her death became part of a violent series of events that unfolded across Adair County that Monday. Kentucky State Police said the incident began in the morning when troopers were asked to respond with the Adair County Sheriff’s Office to a reported shooting at a home on Chestnut Grove Road. The original report was that Michael Adam Curry had been shot there. When law enforcement arrived, an Adair County deputy came under multiple rounds of gunfire from the residence and had to take cover near her cruiser while the shooter barricaded himself inside.
Authorities identified the barricaded gunman as Ryan Sneed of Columbia, Joyce Sneed’s son. As the standoff dragged on, police learned that Ryan Sneed had made threats to kill members of his family. That prompted welfare checks at other homes connected to him. Detectives went to Joyce Sneed’s residence on Lakeview Drive and found her deceased inside. They also went to a residence on Henson Road and found Ryan Sneed’s aunt, Debra Clark, deceased there. Both Joyce Sneed and Debra Clark were pronounced dead at their respective residences by the Adair County Coroner.
The standoff on Chestnut Grove Road continued for hours while Kentucky State Police’s Special Response Team worked to secure the scene and rescue the deputy and another person who had been pinned down by gunfire. During the barricade, authorities said Ryan Sneed periodically fired at law enforcement, and officers returned fire on several occasions. Shortly before 7 p.m., Ryan Sneed came out of the residence armed with a gun. Members of the Kentucky State Police Special Response Team fired their weapons, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the barricade ended, investigators entered the Chestnut Grove Road residence and found Michael Adam Curry deceased inside. In all, the case left three victims dead at three separate residences: Joyce Sneed, Debra Clark, and Michael Adam Curry. Authorities said all other family members were located and found safe during the day. No law enforcement officers were reported injured.
Ryan Sneed was identified as the suspect or person of interest in the deaths, but there were no arrests, charges, trial, or conviction because he was killed during the armed confrontation with law enforcement. Kentucky State Police Post 15 Detective Josh Dicken was assigned to investigate the deaths of Joyce Sneed, Debra Clark, and Michael Adam Curry, while the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team opened a separate investigation into the trooper-involved shooting that ended Ryan Sneed’s life.
