On the rainy early morning of Sunday, November 30, 2014, police officers in Columbia, Missouri, were dispatched to the 1400 block of Illinois Avenue following reports of gunshots. Arriving just before 2:30 a.m., first responders discovered a chaotic scene where two individuals had been struck by gunfire. Among the victims was Rickie Allen Dunn, a 40-year-old male, who was found critically injured alongside an 18-year-old survivor.
Both were transported to a local hospital, but while the teenager was treated for his injuries, Dunn was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Witness accounts and family statements suggest the violence stemmed from an interpersonal dispute rather than a random act. Dunn had reportedly gone to the location to check on his daughter, believing she might be at a nearby party. While at the scene, a confrontation ensued when a man began directing disrespectful and derogatory language toward a female companion of Dunn. Known to his loved ones as a 'peacemaker,' Dunn intervened and told the individual to stop speaking to her in that manner. In the aftermath of this fight, a different individual reportedly approached with a firearm and discharged it into the crowd, striking Dunn and the younger victim.
