In the heart of St. Louis, Missouri, the summer of 2012 brought a tragedy that would leave a lasting scar on a local African American family. On the evening of July 26, 2012, 20-year-old Ronisha Jackson was spending time with friends in Gravois Park, a public space located at the intersection of Miami and Louisiana Avenues in the city’s south side. The group had gathered to socialize and enjoy the warm night, congregating near the park's edge.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., the gathering was abruptly shattered by the sound of gunfire as unknown assailants unleashed a barrage of bullets into the crowd.
The chaotic scene resulted in five individuals being struck by the gunfire. Among them was Ronisha, a young mother who had a one-year-old daughter at the time. Another teenager in the group, 16-year-old Kiera Tanter, was also critically wounded in the attack. Emergency responders rushed both young women to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, they both succumbed to their injuries. The triple shooting left the community in shock, and homicide detectives began an investigation into what appeared to be a senseless act of violence directed at a group of young people.
Despite the immediate launch of an investigation by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, leads were scarce. The authorities described the perpetrators only as 'unknown subject ' who fired numerous shots before fleeing the scene. In the years following the incident, the case remained classified as an open homicide by St. Louis Regional Crime Stoppers. Investigators struggled to identify the shooters, and no arrests were made in connection with Ronisha’s death. The lack of witnesses willing to come forward hampered the ability of law enforcement to bring charges against any suspects.
The devastation for the Jackson family did not end with Ronisha’s unsolved murder. Nearly seven years later, the same family was struck by gun violence again when Ronisha's older brother, 25-year-old Ronald Jackson Jr., was shot and killed in April 2019. His death occurred on South Grand Boulevard, less than a mile from where his sister had been slain. As of the last major public updates provided by local news outlets and crime stopper organizations, both cases remained open and ongoing, with no suspects in custody for the killing of Ronisha Jackson.
