On June 1, 2017, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in the Walnut Park East neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the lives of three individuals and leaving a community in mourning. Jessica Garth, a 24-year-old female, was sitting in a vehicle on the 4900 block of Beacon Avenue along with her boyfriend, Derrick Irving, and another acquaintance, Julian Hayes. The group was ambushed in a quadruple shooting that killed all three adults at the scene or shortly thereafter. The attack was particularly harrowing as it occurred in the presence of Garth and Irving’s young children. While their five-year-old daughter was physically unharmed, their seven-year-old daughter, Deniya, sustained a critical gunshot wound to the head but miraculously survived her injuries after a lengthy hospitalization.

The investigation into the violent outburst quickly identified a suspect, leading to a manhunt that lasted for several weeks. Authorities identified Jerome Leon Buress Jr. as the gunman responsible for the execution-style killings. Following the release of his description and the mounting pressure from law enforcement, Buress surrendered to police custody on June 25, 2017. He was subsequently charged with multiple felonies, including three counts of first-degree murder, domestic assault, and armed criminal action. Prosecutors alleged that Buress approached the car and opened fire on the occupants, an act described by witnesses and officials as cold-blooded, especially given the proximity of the young children to the violence.

Justice for the victims was sought in a trial that concluded in October 2018. During the proceedings, harrowing testimony was presented, including accounts of the seven-year-old survivor shielding her younger sister during the chaos. The jury found Buress guilty on eight counts, including two charges of first-degree murder for the deaths of Garth and Irving, one count of second-degree murder for the death of Hayes, and assault for the injuries inflicted on the child. In January 2019, the court handed down a sentence ensuring Buress would remain behind bars for the rest of his natural life, sentencing him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
