On the evening of January 16, 2023, tragedy struck a residence in the Vandeventer neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Inside a home located in the 4300 block of West Belle Place, 33-year-old Jessica Marie Claybon, a Black female, was spending time with others when the gathering took a violent turn. Earlier in the night, a card game had been taking place at the location, during which an argument reportedly broke out.
The dispute seemed to have escalated beyond the immediate timeframe of the game, leading to a deadly confrontation later that night.
Around 9:15 p.m., the situation culminated in gunfire. Witnesses and preliminary reports indicated that a group of individuals inside a red Jeep pulled up to the residence and fired shots into the home. Jessica was struck multiple times by the gunfire. When officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found her unconscious and not breathing. despite the arrival of emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries, leaving behind two children and a grieving family.
Homicide detectives launched an investigation immediately following the shooting. Early inquiries suggested that the violence was the result of a quarrel, potentially linked to the earlier card game dispute. Investigators initially looked for a man and a woman who were believed to be involved as suspects in the attack. However, despite these early leads regarding the potential involvement of specific individuals, no immediate arrests were made.
In the wake of the killing, Jessica's mother, Ollie Robinson, spoke out publicly to express her heartbreak and to plead for justice. She described her daughter as a giving person who may have been in the company of people who were not a positive influence at the time. Robinson used the opportunity to call for an end to the gun violence plaguing the community, urging those involved in such conflicts to put their weapons down. As of the last available public updates, the investigation remained open with no reported arrests, charges, or convictions connected to the death of Jessica Claybon.
