In the early morning hours of September 20, 2014, a violent disturbance erupted in the parking lot of the 7200 block of East 88th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri. 23-year-old Dominique C. Johnson, a male resident of the area, was present during the altercation. According to witnesses at the scene, the situation escalated when several individuals involved in the argument brandished firearms.
Reports indicate that Johnson was attempting to intervene and break up the fight when the violence turned deadly.
A suspect identified as 20-year-old Kelly J. Lewis allegedly received a handgun from another individual during the confrontation. Witnesses stated that Lewis then opened fire, striking Johnson. After the victim fell to the ground, the assailant reportedly continued to shoot him multiple times. An autopsy later confirmed that Johnson sustained ten gunshot wounds, resulting in his death at the scene. A second victim, whose name was not released, suffered a minor gunshot wound to the wrist during the incident but survived.
Following the investigation, Jackson County prosecutors charged Kelly J. Lewis with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. At the time of the shooting, Lewis was already on probation for a previous homicide. Court records revealed that he had pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2012 for the 2010 killing of Helen Ragan, a Kansas City woman who was struck by a stray bullet while watching television in her home. Lewis had been released on probation in February 2014, just months before the shooting of Dominique Johnson.
