On the afternoon of November 30, 2014, a violent domestic disturbance unfolded at a residence in Imperial, Missouri, resulting in the death of 55-year-old female Debra Lee Hulen. The incident began when Debra contacted 911 to report that her brother was behaving erratically and was out of control at their home in the 5400 block of Old Lemay Ferry Road. The call ended abruptly, disconnecting before dispatchers could gather further details. Moments later, a second emergency call was placed from the same address by the siblings' elderly mother, who frantically informed authorities that both her son and daughter were bleeding.
Upon arriving at the scene, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies discovered Debra deceased on the driveway, having sustained fatal injuries from a gunshot wound. Near the entrance of the home on the porch, officers located her brother, 47-year-old Daniel A. Roberts, who was suffering from a gunshot wound that investigators determined to be self-inflicted. Roberts was treated at the scene and subsequently airlifted to a local area hospital in critical condition.
Detectives learned from the 81-year-old mother of the siblings that the tragedy stemmed from a heated argument between Debra and Daniel. The verbal dispute escalated rapidly when Roberts retrieved a firearm, shot his sister, and then turned the weapon on himself. Roberts was identified as the sole suspect in the homicide. Because he succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital shortly after the shooting, no arrests were made, and the case was closed as a murder-suicide without criminal charges or a trial.
