A significant break in the case appeared to materialize in connection with a separate, chaotic series of events involving a stolen vehicle. Reports indicated that a fatal car crash occurred in St. Louis shortly after the murder, involving a vehicle that had been carjacked. The aftermath of this collision resulted in the death of one passenger within the stolen car and serious legal consequences for the survivors.
Authorities subsequently linked one of the surviving occupants of the crashed vehicle to the death of William Duvall. According to news reports from the time, a passenger who survived the fatal wreck was charged with the December 8 murder. In addition to the murder charge brought against this passenger, the driver of the stolen vehicle faced charges related to the carjacking itself.
