In the early morning hours of February 23, 2022, the community of Hazlehurst, Mississippi, was disturbed by the sound of gunshots. A 14-year-old Black male named Jamarion Williams was later discovered by a passerby at the intersection of Maple Street and Longwood Street. He had sustained gunshot wounds to his head and leg and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Copiah County Coroner, Ellis Stuart, confirmed that the shooting occurred around 4:00 a.m. An autopsy was planned to be conducted at the State Crime Lab.
The death of Jamarion Williams, who was born on June 28, 2007, to Jamarquis Martin and Monchele Williams, prompted a homicide investigation by the Hazlehurst police. Despite their efforts to gather evidence and follow leads, the investigation has been met with challenges due to a lack of witnesses and substantial evidence. Authorities have considered the possibility of gang-related activity but have not confirmed if it was a factor in the shooting.
As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made in connection with Jamarion's murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Hazlehurst police have urged the community to come forward with any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. The lack of progress has been a source of ongoing sorrow and frustration for the family and the community, who await justice for the young victim. Funeral services for Jamarion were held on March 12, 2022, and he was buried in the Crystal Springs City Cemetery.
