On the night of Wednesday, April 1, 2015, authorities in St. Francois County, Missouri, were alerted to a violent incident in the unincorporated community of Valles Mines. Law enforcement officers responded to a location near the intersection of Highway JJ and Rouggly Road around 10:00 p.m., where they discovered the lifeless body of a 42-year-old male, later identified as Edward 'Eddie' Douglas. Investigators determined that Douglas had sustained fatal injuries from gunfire, specifically suffering two gunshot wounds—one to the left side of his head and another to his upper left chest.
The subsequent homicide investigation quickly focused on digital evidence and witness accounts to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. A cellular phone recovered next to the victim's body revealed a text message exchange between Douglas and a local acquaintance named Daniel Ryburn Dunn. In one message sent shortly before his death, Douglas had communicated with a woman, indicating that he and Dunn had just been involved in a confrontation. Additionally, a witness in the vicinity reported hearing two distinct gunshots before observing a dark-colored mid-size truck speeding away from the scene, a vehicle description that matched a 1998 Ford Ranger known to be driven by Dunn.
Detectives located and interviewed the 63-year-old suspect, who initially claimed he had spent the day with the victim but had dropped him off at a commuter lot earlier that evening before returning home alone. However, physical evidence contradicted this narrative. A search of Dunn’s property and vehicle yielded blood spatter on the passenger side of his truck as well as on the shirt he was wearing upon his return. Based on the gathered evidence, Daniel Ryburn Dunn was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Edward Douglas. He was subsequently held in the St. Francois County Jail without bond as the legal proceedings commenced.
