On June 15, 2015, forty-year-old Jason B. Hagan was killed during a violent domestic incident at a residence located just east of Columbia, Missouri. Law enforcement officers from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the home following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a tragic scene indicating an apparent murder-suicide involving family members.
Inside the residence, authorities found the body of Jason Hagan, who had sustained fatal gunshot
wounds. Further investigation at the scene led to the discovery of a second body outside the home, identified as 66-year-old Thomas Scofield. Investigators determined that Scofield was Hagan’s father-in-law. The evidence suggested that Scofield had shot Hagan inside the house before exiting the residence and turning the weapon on himself, resulting in his own death.
Two young children, aged one and three, were present in the home at the time of the shooting but were physically unharmed. They were subsequently placed in the care of family members. Because the sole suspect in the homicide, Thomas Scofield, died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, there were no arrests made or charges filed in connection with Jason Hagan’s death. The investigation was concluded with the determination that the shooting was a murder-suicide.
